DO YOU BELIEVE IN LOVE?
FEB 1 2002
In 2 days Risa and I will talk with Deanna to let her in on our decision to quit being together – begin helping her come to accept the fact that we are quitting trying to work it out with each other and moving apart.
We were driving home from School and an early dinner.
Deanna starts singing “Do you believe in love…da da da da da da….I really don’t think its strong enough…is enough is enough is enough”, the Cher song, over and over. Its meaning wasn’t lost on me long ago but we hadn’t discussed it.
Deanna: You know dad I heard that song when we were in California last year and it really stuck in my head. Sometimes I sing it in my head and sometimes I sing it with my friends. Its one of the songs I hear myself singing most. Do you think the song is true?
Dad: Well it can be true that sometimes some people’s love isn’t strong enough to keep them together but I don’t think its because love itself isn’t strong enough. I don’t want you to think love isn’t strong enough just because some times people in love don’t work things out. I think that understanding love is like understanding anything else – you must do it for yourself, think and feel your own way into understanding what love means. This is a lifelong process and you won’t understand love for many years. But as you begin to love your own process of understanding what love is then that love will become strong enough. You don’t have to believe or not believe in something if you can feel and understand it. You will learn about love for yourself and if you do that well you will discover just how powerful love is.
